September: to harvest or not to harvest ?

Posted: Thursday, September 8th, 2011

“To harvest or not to harvest…”  a refrain which echoes from farm to farm in the month of September.  Viticulturist would start as soon as possible in order to end his long work of the year, the winemaker would wait as long as possible to get grapes at their optimum maturity.

The sky will decide it!   August  was good, at the end of the month grapes just needed some water, still wished to enjoy some good sunny days, warm temperatures and cooler nights…: in the first days of September we had a light rain, temperatures now fall in the seasonal average, nights are cooler, weather forecasts are good. We can be confident !(and anyway we are ready for harvest)

Meanwhile we invite you  to come and meet with us to taste our wines at the 41° Expo del Vino Chianti Classico, in Greve in Chianti: Thursday 8th, Friday 9th,  Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th.  We will be there waiting for you.

August draws near inexorable…

Players can change yet the scene is the same, as in a déjà vu : the winemaker and the viticulturist together leave to their vineyards inspection, to monitor  grapes on the vines. When they are back they look very satisfied: the vintage today promises to be very good!

The vines are in excellent physical and mental conditions (can avoid the psychologist’s assistance!) and show excellent foliage. The high temperatures we had beginning summer and the good water reserves we got from winter and spring rains gave an early veraison. In spite of our first strict selection of buds we still need to do cluster thinning in order to keep a reduced production and reach the optimal concentration we aim to.

…and, since any fair promise gives some anxiety of waiting… the pre-birth syndrome starts to manifest at the winery!…

Heaven permitting nature will do its work bringing the fruit to perfect ripeness, then the hand of man will have to translate this result in a fine wine,… but that’s another story! (to be continued…)

“it was born!”

August is here punctual!

Quindi, possiamo augurare buon lavoro a Madre Natura e…buone vacanze a tutti!

August is here punctual!

No one day late, August is here and we are all prompt to welcome it and take a break, a  vacation to enjoy seaside, mountain, sun, relax: our rest after a long working year!

Somebody will get ahead with its job, it will work silently , consistently  to carry our grapes to ripening: it’s  Mother Nature.

A cold and rainy winter delayed budburst and fruit set. Veraison has just started, a little bit late due to the long rainy and cool spring season which seemed not to give way to summer… Yet a hot and dry July helped to make up time, today grapes are sound and look to be ready for ripening: good weather in August and September is recommended!

Thanks to the long rainy season soil is reach of water, however we will need to monitor our youngest vines whose roots could be too short to reach water in depth, we will assist them if needed.

Vines and grapes are healthy and we are used to say: “health is everything”….

Hence, we wish Mother Nature a good work….and you all a good vacation!
