GOD SAVE THE WINE at CHIC NONNA, 19TH JANUARY

GOD SAVE THE WINE @ CHIC NONNA 19th Jnuary, 2023

Wines inspire emotions, the environment, the atmosphere surrounding us when we taste a wine, a food, or smell a perfume, all become an accomplice to our perception and the memory we retain of it. Chic is a beautiful and elegant environment, as well as a stone wall from which to enjoy a spectacular view, or the kitchen of a house where serenity and good taste prevail. Chic is good wine! A

Eccellenze di Toscana@SARANNO FAMOSI NEL VINO

A new and exciting format proposed by AIS in Florence, 3rd and 4th December at the Stazione Leopolda: a modern and more wide-ranging proposal, where the 'Eccellenze di Toscana' will be the godfathers in a catwalk of new labels and emerging wineries in Italy. We will be there, with our wines that have always borne witness to the oldest winemaking tradition, and new proposals that bear witness to our passion and continuous projection towards new experiences. The old teaches, the new treasures

2022 vintage: the power of nature!

It is amazing how nature reacts to climate challenges. We look at the younger vineyards, which have greatly experienced water stress first and then the effects of a major hailstorm: we see an extraordinary phenomenon of revegetation, as if it were spring
It is the vine's physiological response to the powerful hailstorm. Having regained the nourishment, the water, the energies that being lacking had induced the growth stoppage, they now rebloom. By absurdity, if there were summer weather conditions during the fall,

2022 vintage : the situation at the end of July

After about a month, we ask again our agronomist  about the condition of our vineyards. How are the vines reacting to the abnormal temperatures(very high) and drought at this time? Francesco Caselli says: “The situation differs from vineyard to vineyard, depending on the age of the vineyards, exposure, and soil” We can learn so much from his description of the diverse conditions in the vineyards and the reasons behind them. “Some of the youngest vineyards(5/6 years old) show clear signs of water stress.

2022 VINTAGE : mid June expectations

We interviewed our agronomist, asking him how such an early summer season might affect the growth of  grapes in our vineyards. His words : "As of today, mid-June, conditions in our vineyards can be described as normal; no events affecting quality or quantity. We could place this vintage, today, side by side with the conditions recorded at the same date in 2015.  The warm weather speeds up the phenological stages; grape fruit set has already occurred. Plants grow vigorously, especially the

2022 Chianti Classico Collection

An appointment that hasn't been on the agenda for too long: the Chianti Classico Collection. After the long virtual interlude opened in our life, we have the desire, the need for a sensorial experience. Aromas, flavors, physical perceptions are fundamental in the wine world, words have their value and their power, but the language of wine is often untranslatable. So, let the wine do the talking:  the Chianti Classico Collection 2022 is coming back to present the new Gallo Nero vintages -

waiting for 2022 spring…

Luca Maroni awards Castello di Gabbiano 2018 Cabernet Franc

It is not just poetry when Luca Maroni says: “Wine is pleasant when its taste recalls in a true way (consistent, balanced, integer) the taste of the fruit from which it has been obtained” and “The fruit-grade of a wine is directly proportioned to the consistency, Balance and Integrity of its taste” It is not just mathematics when Luca Maroni calculates: Index of Quality/Pleasantness/Fruit-grade = Consistency + Balance + Integrity IQ/P = C + B + I It wasn't just our promise when we

2021 harvest: last day

Last 2021 harvest day: picking up Sangiovese grapes in the Bellezza vineyard. First comments coming from the winery confirm our expectations: reduced quantities, very much unfortunately, and low yields (we knew it). Yet, quality in some vineyards was really surprising - definitely above expectations. Some excitement rose in the cellar at the arrival of some Sangiovese grapes  (and other varieties as well). Every harvest is different and each time it brings new surprises!

2021 Sangiovese harvest

It’s harvest time!   September was propitious: sunny, with good temperature ranges day and night, some gentle rain and good ventilation.  As expected, some difficulties in the youngest vineyards that most suffered from the heat and drought: here further to the natural selection the viticulturist’s expert eyes and hands selected only the grapes they deserve. We have already finished harvesting Merlot grapes. Let's start in a few days the most beautiful Sangiovese, addressed to the Riserva Chianti Classico

The grapes battle against the heat and drought

For those interested in the world of viticulture, a walk through the Sangiovese grapes vineyards today can be very instructive. It is clear where and why the grapes have suffered and, where and why the grapes have held up well these very hot and dry weeks. Younger vineyards whose vines have shallower roots show suffering, as well as vineyards whose exposure did not allow to adequately protect all the clusters from the sun - here some clusters look half in good

Sangiovese grapes veraison

A walk among the rows of vines - we are in the Bellezza vineyard - the veraison of the grapes has begun. The heat of the last few weeks resulted in the grapes veraison about a week earlier than the average in recent years, but the conditions of the grapes are very good. It is the onset of the ripening of the grapes. The veraison is the change of color of the grape berries: this represents the transition from berry growth

The territory of CHIANTI CLASSICO in the UNESCO World Heritage?

The candidacy of the Chianti Classico territory in the Unesco cultural and natural World Heritage list has been approved. Thus begins the process for the recognition of our territory, the Gallo Nero production area, in the World Heritage List. It is just the first step of a long journey we hope will lead to the right acknowledgement of the importance that the Chianti Classico area has in the cultural panorama of Tuscany, of Italy. At Castello di Gabbiano we hope that

Castello di Gabbiano achieves V.I.V.A. certification

As a result of our focus on reducing environmental impact and sustainable development of wine production we joined some projects and got Sustainability certifications. In the year 2015 we became acquainted with V.I.V.A. project "The Sustainability of Viticulture in Italy" -  part of the national “Sustainability and Culture” project started year 2011 by the Ministry of the Environment and of Protection of the Territory and Sea.  The pilot phase of the project - completed in 2014 - led to the definition

Climate change: the wine consumer mindfulness

Wine mindfulness : climate is changing, the way grapes are grown change, the wine change. The climate changes we are now facing are not really unwonted as we might think in the history of wine-growing. At the matter of facts wine-growers always had to deal with adaptation to the climate. Today to front a warmer climate, we choose to plant vines further apart, use rootstocks that are more resistant to drought, make sure that leaves increasingly protect grape bunches from sunlight. Also the selection

SANGIOVESE: SAPLING VINE TRAINING SYSTEM?

We have always preferred the single spurred cordon training system in our sangiovese grapes vineyards. However, we never ignore the different technical experimentation, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Thus a new sapling plant Sangiovese was born in 2017 -  a still very young vineyard that we are following very carefully. Today we share the beauty of these young vines that proudly grow like saplings, confronting perplexed with their sisters in the surrounding vineyards which are growing

Today a new label comes to enrich the collection: 2018 Cabernet Franc . First tastings new Oil

From Castello di Gabbiano oil mill, the first considerations on the 2020 olives pressing: a very satisfactory year from the quantity side, many olives, unfortunately the yield is low (under 11%), but the quality of the oil is very good! At the first tastings the 2020 oil, from an organoleptic point of view, is very characteristic, rich in aromas and flavor, with the typical bitter note of our oil. It will be bottled very soon.

At the oil mill

The pressing of the olives takes place immediately after harvesting at the  oil mill of Castello di Gabbiano. The whole process, which provides for cleaning and subsequent washing of the olives, crushing hammer and for the centrifugal extraction, cold occurs(not over 27°C)
what results, however, offers us very warm sensations on the palate, heart, mind. The new oil is coming!

2020 olives harvest started

We started the olives harvest: waiting to hear the agronomist's words on the state of the olives and the first tastings of the new oil, we share some suggestive images

2020 Harvest: the winemaker’s words

(
read here previous episodes)  It is always the very last weeks of the grapes ripening season to determine the final quality of the vintage. The 2020 vintage was not easy from a qualitative point of view although the conditions were excellent up to 3 weeks before harvest.  With the late September and early October rains, everything got complicated. Having a large extension of vineyards, every year we find different expressions in our SANGIOVESE vineyards: this year more than ever the location

2020 Harvest: updating from the cellar

(
read here previous episodes)  The harvest keeps, the Sangiovese grapes that have already reached their full ripeness arrive in the cellar and undertake their transformation process. Most of these sangiovese grapes will perform the alcoholic fermentation in small stainless steel - only for some of these grapes our choice falls on the wooden fermentation. In this case we use so-called "exhausted" barriques, of third or fourth passage.

2020 Harvest: updating from the vineyards

(
read here previous episodes)  Harvest is still on: we harvested about 5,000 quintals of grapes over 100 hectares - low yields (less than 45 quintals/hectare) our FORECAST is confirmed. There are approximately 50 hectares of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Petit Verdot still to pick. We started to harvest the best Sangiovese grapes for our  Riserva Chianti Classico:  great SATISFACTION, the Sangiovese grapes are still healthy and beautiful, despite the repeated rains. The CONCERN is fairly represented by the water-soaked soil, in some vineyards we
